Home Birth

I wanted to write a blog to encourage mums to think about home births.

Ive had 3 children with 3 different births, my first was a long exhausting labour, 37 hours, every drug possible and Sonny needing forceps. I can remember the midwife putting Sonny on me and me shaking my head as I physically had no energy left in me to even hold my newborn baby, I was a young mum who had no clue what was happening I didn't listen to my body I just listened to everyone around me.

With my second it was 5 years later and I was determined not to have the same birth all over again. I researched more about my options I was to scared at this time to do it at home as in the back of my head I thought how would I cope if it was like last time. Thankfully Luca was a beautiful birth 2.5 hours start to finish with gas and air and a birthing pool at hospital.

Right now lets get onto why I am writing this blog. So my best friend said to me holly why dont you try a home birth, I kind of laughed at her to start, me have a home birth? that night I went home and googled and googled all there was to know. To have my baby in the comfort of my home with two dedicated midwifes, why on earth would I not. So around 30 weeks I got the birthing pool and all the bits I needed to support me at home to be fair it wasn't actually that much a few towels a flannel etc. My partner was so reluctant for me to have it at home I think he was more worried about the mess, I stood my ground! this is my last baby i am doing this my way how I want it to be.

41 weeks - Saturday night tv was on the lights were low the contractions started, I called my best friend and sister who were my birthing partners along with my oh. The contractions came on fast, every time I had one I ran to a wall in my front room, this was the wall that got me through the very hard stage. Within 20 minutes of calling the hospital the midwives were knocking at the door, by this time I was in fully established labour, they examined me holly you are 8cm! that pool needs to be filled now. once the pool was filled I got in with everyone nesting around me in my kitchen, I was making noises only a animal would make roaring through the pain. Holly I think you are ready to push with one Almighty push he was out in one. Holly catch your baby I was in shock sweeping him up from under the water his cord was around his neck the midwife untangled him and then we did the amazing skin to skin.

What I loved about the whole experience I had professionals every step of the way. No one walking in and out of my room. I knew I was safe I was in my home. my body was relaxed Roux arrived in 2 hours from start to finish by 4 hours I was tucked up in bed with my beautiful newborn baby, whilst all this was going on my other children were fully asleep in bed. Im super proud to say I had a home birth and it was just prefect the midwifes were amazing, they cleaned everything up and were incredible throughout the whole birth. I listened to my body I was in control.

So remember you have no one telling you who can be in your home you can give birth where you want in your own home, you have no waiting to be discharged, you do not have to take your baby out in the early days. two dedicated midwives supporting you, they bring gas and air to. So if you are thinking about a home birth please just go for it! It was the best birth I had and the happiest i have felt i would go and say it was the best day of my life. I did it my way and I felt like a warrior I did it!
